Laptop – A Portable computer

A laptop is a battery or AC-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be transported and conveniently used in provisional spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries, temporary offices, and at meetings. Laptop computers generally cost more than desktop computers with the similar capabilities because they are more challenging to design and manufacture.

A laptop can successfully be turned into a desktop computer with a docking station, a hardware frame that supplies connections for input/output devices such as a printer or larger monitor. Laptops usually come with displays that use thin-screen technology. The thin film transistor or active matrix screen is brighter and views better at different angles than the STN screen. Laptops use several different approaches for integrating a mouse into the keyboard, including the touch pad, the trackball, and the pointing stick. CD-ROM and digital versatile disc drives may be built-in or attachable. S

Mobile Entertainment with the HP Pavillion DV3-1075US

A good laptop serves a lot of purposes, ranging from basic business needs to wireless connectivity on the go, to the principle entertainment system for some families and households. One laptop that shines in all three of these roles is the HP Pavillion DV3-1075US.

When it came out, it was geared as a not-quite ultraportable with a solid, if not stunning, multimedia focus. Fast forward by nine months to the present, and it’s still a capable machine, but rapidly moving down the price ladder, as netbooks eat the bottom of the market.

The HP Pavilion DV3-1075US has an impressive spec sheet. It is powered by dual-core 2.1 GHz AMD Turion X2 RM-72 processors. It comes with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, and can be upgraded to a maximum of 8 GB of RAM. It sports a fast 320 gigabyte SATA hard drive spinning a 5400 RPM, and is equipped with a dual-layer DVDRW drive for playing and burning CDs and DVDs.

Not to be left out on the gaming side, the video card is an ATI Radeon 3200 with 64 megs of RAM; this isn’t as good as you’ll find on a desktop gaming rig, but for a portable machine (particularly with the ability to overflow into system RAM), it’s more than adequate, unless you’re trying to play Crysis.

The difference between Laptops, Notebooks and Netbooks: 101

You hear the word netbook quite often recently and may start to wonder what that is. Does that have something to do with notebooks? But I thought those were laptops? There are different origins to each word and many “experts” will tell you the exact time, place and company of each origin. For example, netbook is currently being trademarked (if not already) by a UK firm. But in short, they are marketing terms created to sell new lines of products.

So are you telling me laptops are notebooks, which in turn are the new netbooks? Far from it. Although they may be marketing terms, they do in reality serve as categories within the portable personal computer category that denote a specific purpose to consumers. These three marketing terms tell the consumer where they should be looking based on their specific needs. For example, a teenager who does schoolwork, play games and surfs the web will probably want a laptop for his needs. Another teenager who does schoolwork, blogs and carries it to school will probably want a small notebook. A mother of these two teenagers who emails and surfs the web would probably be happy with a netbook.

Finding an Affordable Laptop

Though times are tough around the world, the current global recession hasn’t had a significant effect on the number of people choosing to purchase small, convenient laptops.

In fact, the number of laptops and small computers – known as netbooks – has increased, as more people are turning to the convenience of being able to bring their computers with them wherever they go. In addition, the price of these laptops has also decreased, meaning there are cheaper computers on the market now that are affordable to anyone looking for a new computer.

These days it seems that everyone is in need of a computer, and it appears that cheaper laptops are making it easier for users to purchase smaller, convenient computers that are very portable.

Netbooks are another cheap laptop choice that are used primarily to access email and other Internet services. Since they don’t need to store many programmes, netbooks are perfect for those who just need to be online throughout the day. However, it’s not only netbooks that are becoming cheaper in price. Laptops that fully boast the necessary programmes are now cheaper than ever and very easy to use and carry around.

Apple Macbooks – Apple Notebooks

When Apple redesigned their range of Apple Macbooks in 2008, they managed to appeal to serious, business users, students and to gamers.

Apple have added the NVIDIA graphics card to their MacBook range, which offers crisper, sharper graphics and moving images no longer appear blurred, which is a decided bonus if you fancy yourself as a Tim Burton, Ron Howard or Quentin Tarantino and want to produce and direct your own movies with iMovie HD or iDVD. In short Apple has opted to introduce one of the very best, with their decision to integrate NVIDIA into their MacBook.

Apple have dispensed with the mouse button and have installed a multi touch pad, which is similar to the operations of Apples iPod and initially it may take some getting used to for first time Mac users, but, is likely to become extremely popular because the MacBook trackpad can be customised to suit individual users. The trackpad is made from glass, rather than plastic, which fits in better with the MacBook’s sleek new look.

Notebook Laptop Sales Can Save You A Lot of Money, If You're Smart

Computers, especially notebook computers, are a prime example of a ‘disposable’ electronic item. Due to Moore’s Law and transistor count doubling every 18 months, the capabilities of computers progress as regularly as clockwork. Which means that what was a high end machine last Christmas may be deep in the discount bin now.

The reason why sale notebooks are popular is the same reason that Intel Atom-powered netbooks are popular: For most computing tasks, there’s no real downside to having a machine that’s less than the extreme top-end-of-the-market. No matter how much Microsoft has cluttered up Windows with the Aero interface, advances in processor technology keep bailing them out…and for the people who primarily use a notebook for surfing the weapon, doing some word processing and writing emails, the vast majority of laptops released in the last three years (almost two complete generations) are more than adequate.

Intel is aware of this; the Atom processor is roughly comparable to a Pentium IV in overall capabilities, yet consumes about 5 watts when run (a typical laptop CPU runs about 30 watts). This allows Atom driven computers to run for hours at a time from a fairly modest battery. This processor came on to the market in the second half of 2008, and is now pretty much the category standard. However, even as the category standard, netbook go through the sale notebook phenomenon. Machines that entered the market at $400 are now selling for $250 as the manufacturers compete for consumer demand.

Tips on Buying Cheap Laptops

Laptops have become the preferred equipment for students, travelers, and users who want portability and convenience. With the widespread availability of wireless or Wi-Fi connections, having a laptop will not keep you tethered to a desk. If you follow this guide on buying cheap laptops, you will be able to buy a great laptop at a cheap price.

Start With A Reputable Company
One of the great places to purchase a cheap laptop is from an online computer company’s outlet site. Dell, Gateway, Apple, and Toshiba are just a few of the major laptop manufacturers that offer their refurbished, scratched and dented, and off lease laptops. In most cases, these companies will offer certified computers that come with a warranty that is similar to that of a new laptop computer. By buying from a reputable company, you will get a great laptop at a cheap price but it will also come from a company that it is willing to stand behind its products.

Check Their Inventory To Find The Features You Desire
When buying cheap laptops from an outlet, be sure that you determine the features that you want and don’t be too eager to buy strictly on price. It doesn’t make sense to buy a cheap computer if it doesn’t offer the features that you need. You can find the features you need from the available inventory. Sites such as Dell and Gateway have a large enough outlet inventory to help you find the right combination of price and features.

Tips for Cheap (and Happy) Laptop Shopping

In the current economic state, everyone seems to be looking for ways to cut costs. Often people are trying to balance a growing need to stay connected in a high-tech world with the need to conserve resources. Fortunately, buying a cheap laptop can actually be a simple thing if you start with the correct attitude. It can also be a good investment. On the job hunt it speaks volumes about your tech savvy to bring in your own presentation. The portability of your information is fantastic for entrepreneurs and homemakers alike. If your needs are simple you can probably find what you need at a very reasonable price.

Some things to consider before shopping:

1. What do you need to do with it? Ask yourself if this is a status symbol, a working tool, a device from enjoying online media, or a gaming system. Customizing your search to meet your specific needs can help reduce costs. For example: if you need the laptop for heavy spreadsheet work, then you want more processing power, but less graphic or media capability. If you want a cheap laptop, don’t expect to get everything – but be specific and you will get what you need.

Netbooks are the latest craze

Recently, for the first time in computing history, laptop and notebook unit sales were larger as a percentage than desktops. This signals a true milestone on the path to the future of the field. As the speed and number crunching capabilities of consumer technology has increased, so has the functionality it can offer us. What has just as steadily decreased is the physical size of these same electronic components. This recent usurpation of sales has taken place because we have finally arrived at a nexus point in which form factor and speed are combining in just the right ratios, for the first time, giving the average person the performance and usability they want out of something portable.

It’s not hard to imagine that the portable to desktop market share ratio will continue in this direction as power and size complimentary continue along their respective curves. Looking at history, our current selection of computers seems almost unbelievably advanced. A netbook costing $300 dollars today easily outperforms the thousand plus dollar desktops of barely ten years ago.

The massive sales of the new “netbook” class of mobile computing devices seem to obviously reinforce this “sweet spot” assumption quite clearly. While laptops have been increasingly popular for years and are immeasurably more mobile than desktops, for most of their existence up to this point they have still been too large, heavy, and clunky (as well as slow) to be used casually as well as daily by the average individual. With today’s advanced components, no sacrifice has to be made in any of these areas. Put simply, we have reached a point where computers are so useful and so mobile that they are finally ready for anyone in any situation. Perhaps in the near future, our computers will be as ubiquitous as legal pads!
